What PlayStation plus games are we getting in August 2021?

This month, Sony is giving its PlayStation Plus subscribers Plants vs. Zombies Battle for Neighborville, Tennis World Tour 2 and Hunter’s Arena: Legends.

Plants vs. Zombies Battle for Neighborville

From its stylish social hub, you can pick from its six PvP multiplayer modes, a co-op tower-defence mode, and even free roam areas with standalone campaigns that can be played solo or with a friend (split-screen co-op is available for all modes on console, but not on PC). Most are derivative of modes you already know – Suburbination is just a three-point domination mode like you’d see in any Call of Duty, for example – but the variety meant I was always able to find something I was in the mood for.

Tennis World Tour 2

Tennis games tend to be a lot of fun, but even the best ones struggle to capture the intricacy of the sport. In franchises like Virtua Tennis, the emphasis is on baseline rallies rather than pin-point ball placement, and so matches devolve into a battle of attrition as players slug it out from left-to-right until the angles no longer make sense. Tennis World Tour 2, a much-improved sequel from the developer of this year’s AO Tennis 2, captures the flow of the sport better than ever before – at the expense of accessibility for those who aren’t willing to master it.

Tennis World Tour 2

Hunter’s Arena: Legends combines melee-focused battle royale action and MOBA-style level progression to form one of the most unique games. This mishmash of various popular competitive genres features a robust map, 12 playable characters, and up to 60-player battles. The game can be a touch overwhelming at first, as it demands you make good use of its various overlapping systems to find success, but it hits plenty of sweet spots, too. Hunter’s Arena: Legends’ approach is novel, there are many kinks, including awkward targeting, clunky combos, and general balance issues. Hunter’s Arena: Legends may not be a game you’d invest in right away, but it should be interesting to see where developer Mantisco takes this game going forward.
